About the Role
We are seeking a proactive and independent Mid-Level Accountant to support a civil construction, trucking, earth-moving, and traffic management company based in Melbourne. This role is perfect for a problem-solver who enjoys taking full ownership of the accounts—from daily bookkeeping and payroll to monthly reporting and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
• Full-Cycle Accounting: Manage daily transactions and maintain accurate, up-to-date records in Xero.
• Accounts Management: Process accounts payable/receivable and perform meticulous bank and credit card reconciliations.
• Project Accounting: Prepare progress claims with complete supporting documentation; conduct job costing and labor costing.
• General Ledger: Manage monthly journals, accruals, depreciation, and ensure general ledger accuracy.
• Reporting: Prepare management reports, including P&L, balance sheets, and cashflow insights.
• AU Payroll: Process payroll strictly under Modern Awards and Australian standards.
• Verification: Verify timesheets using scheduling platforms and GPS logs to ensure accuracy.
• Obligations: Manage PAYG, STP, superannuation, leave entitlements, and employee allowances.
• Lodgments: Support the preparation of BAS/GST and year-end financial packs
• Process Improvement: Identify gaps in workflows and recommend automation (Excel, Power Automate, or Xero apps) to improve efficiency.
• Compliance Tracking: Maintain employee records, licenses, and compliance alerts (expiry dates/document control).
• Independent Coordination: Support scheduling and invoicing coordination, acting as a reliable point of
contact for leadership.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Experience: 3–5 years of solid accounting/bookkeeping experience—must have experience with Australian standards.
• Software Expert: Advanced proficiency in Xero (Non-negotiable) and Microsoft Excel.
• Independence: Proven ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Problem-Solving: Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot accounting discrepancies or system issues.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal English skills, including high responsiveness via WhatsApp and email.
• Industry Knowledge: Previous experience in Construction, Logistics, or Civil Engineering sectors.
• Tech Savvy: Familiarity with scheduling apps and internal digital integration tools.
• Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and pivot between accounting and
administrative support as needed.
