Description 

Job Description:  Maintains, repairs and operates all equipment and machinery within the Surimi plant, for production of fish products in an at seafood processing environment.

Primary Job Functions: 

  • Continuously monitor and maintain all equipment including; decanters, mincers, mixers and extruders used in the Surimi plant within the processing factory for efficiency and function.
  • Understand and oversee Quality Control program procedures, processing equipment and species variation requirements, as directed by the Factory Management team.
  • Adapt to potential changes in machinery operation based on fish species, age, size, production pace and product mix requirements.
  • Assists with training in machine safety, Lock Out/Tag Out awareness and optimal machine performance.
  • Makes all necessary maintenance and rebuild repairs of Surimi plant mechanical equipment and electrical systems.
  • Regularly tests systems and operation to ensure electrical and mechanical components are operating safely and within machine specifications.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of parts onboard the vessel for repairs both at sea and in the shipyard.
  • Identify and address worn or damaged equipment, communicating and documenting maintenance and parts needs with the appropriate departments.
  • Schedules maintenance, repair and labor needs for shipyard layup periods. Oversee direction and implementation of shipyard maintenance and repair program, including documenting workflow, parts requisitions and inventory.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Surimi equipment, production mix, product quality and safety and systems updates.
  • Communicates effectively and works as part of a team with Surimi Technicians, supervisors, crew, office personnel and vendors to ensure a successful production operation environment.
  • Attend all planned meetings and training as required.

Minimum Requirements 

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years verified experience as a full shift Surimi Technician including: knowledge of decanters, mixers and extruders, as well as calibration and lab equipment. 
  • Ability to read and understand manuals, schematics, calibration readouts and gauges used in the fulfillment of Quality Control procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication/documentation.
  • Lock Out/Tag Out training or ability to attain training certificate.
  • HACCP Certification preferred.
  • Adaptable to changes in product requirements and the need for equipment adjustment. 
  • Work on rotation both at sea and in port for all required trips and maintenance periods.

Conditions on the Vessel:

  • Shifts are 12 hours per day, 7 days a week for the duration of the fishing contract.
  • Contracts are seasonal, duration based on the season and the availability of fish.
  • Conditions are regularly cold and wet and weather will cause the vessel to move unexpectedly during operation.
  • Crewmembers provided with a bunk, mattress and locker in crew quarters.
  • Crew lounge provides access to two computer kiosks for short-term usage during breaks.

Employee Responsibility:

  • Employees taking medication or requiring eyeglasses or contacts need a sufficient supply or backup glasses to last at least 90 days.
  • Maintains physical and dental health in preparation for work at sea, far from medical facilities, pharmacies or dental services.
  • Employees provide their own rain gear: boots, pants and jacket. Rain gear should be clean, waterproof and comfortable over clothing.
  • Employees provide their own bedding: blanket, sheets and pillows. Large, thick blankets or sleeping bags require a removable duvet cover or sleeping bag liner for washing.
  • Enough clothing, socks, warm layers, to last 8-9 days between laundry dates, lightweight shoes for crew lounge/eating areas, and toiletries for up to 90 days.
