Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Open Select is a Series B fintech company focused on building fraud detection models for financial institutions. They are seeking a Head of Machine Learning to lead a data science team, own the model lifecycle, and drive product direction through innovative research and hands-on mentoring.
Responsibilities
- Grow a team of 2 to 3 data scientists into a team of 5 to 6, and raise the bar with every hire
- Mentor with depth by getting hands-on with your team's work, not from arm's length
- Lead planning and set priorities across product, engineering, and leadership
- Own the full model lifecycle, from data acquisition through production monitoring
- Research emerging fraud patterns and turn what you find into new product directions
- Write production-ready code that powers real-time partner decisions
- Design and present analyses that inform product, risk, marketing, and sales
Skills
- You have built and deployed models that were core to a company's business. Not a proof of concept. Not a dashboard. Models that mattered when they were wrong
- You have led a data science or applied ML team for at least 4 years for a fast growing startup (20- 400 people) with broad scope
- You write production code yourself and you will pass a rigorous technical assessment without needing to prepare for it
- You come from fintech, cybersecurity, health tech, or insurance. Pure analytics backgrounds will not clear the bar here
- You think from first principles about ambiguous problems and drive them to deployment without being told how
- You explain complex technical work clearly to senior non-technical stakeholders, and you change their minds
- Experience with identity verification
- Experience with graph databases
- Experience with feature stores
